Public Transit
Due to the increased number of cars on the road in many metropolitan areas, traffic jams, congestion, accidents, and other delays have become an aggravating part of the daily commute. Many people believe that this annoying, daily experience is just part of the normal workweek.

San Mateo County offers many public transportation options, including Caltrain and SamTrans, the county's principal transit authority that services most locations across the peninsula.

Reduce Commuting Stress
San Mateo County Commute Alternatives Program advocates for a variety of new commuting choices to reduce commuting stress associated with traffic congestion. In turn, these solutions provide the following benefits to commuters:
  • Annual savings of hundreds of dollars
  • Increased productivity
  • Decreased stress and tension
  • Reduced risk of traffic accidents and injury on the road
  • Potentially more leisure time for personal activities such as reading, resting, or games.

Save Money on Commuting Expenses
Auto insurance, parking, gas, maintenance, wear and tear on commuter's personal vehicles, and toll fees can add up to a considerable expense for the average commuter driving alone.
San Mateo County employees opting to take an alternative method of transportation to work can save money by sharing expenses with others or eliminating personal vehicle-related expenses altogether. Come join nearly 1,200 county employees who are currently taking advantage of our public transit subsidy program by ordering their Caltrain, BART, Muni, SamTrans, VTA, AC Transit and Golden Gate Transit fare loaded onto their Clipper Card through our program.
